Why leadership?
If you give me two choices, to lead or to follow? My answer is definitely to lead. To be a leader, to be a person who leads with confidence, lead with determination.
Believe it or not, I used to be a really timid girl. Being the type of person who always followed others' opinions and did not think for myself at all. I struggled to have my own voice. What transformed me into the empowering leader I am today was the opportunity to study abroad in the United States and a chance to be a part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Millions of opportunities and dreams are presented on this campus. The campus has a friendly atmosphere for international students which encourages me to be more vocal. Since coming to U of I, I’ve gotten involved in many multicultural and diverse registered student organizations, and the Office of Volunteer. By getting involved in such leadership centered organizations, I find that my interests are continuously growing towards discovering new opportunities to demonstrate my leadership abilities. With much enthusiasm, I was accepted by the Illinois Leadership Center at the end of my freshman year and started my amazing position as the Leadership Paraprofessional. My position allows me to lead a group in various activities and improve the communication skills between my team and myself to reach our goals. My beliefs about myself, my abilities, my influences, and my potentials all changed the moment I started my college life.
Being a leader gives me the opportunity to take the initiatives to start something new, such as a new project to create a more balanced environment for international students to attend career fairs.
Leadership has helped me build up my confidence. By serving as the Cultural Chair and Academic Chair of my sorority, I have gained much more experience and knowledge about my event planning and communication skills. It gives me honor to not only receive compliment from the public about my work, but also the feeling of satisfaction and victory with every event. My achievements and success are what keeps me motivated to work harder for more accomplishments in the future.
