The decision to join and become a sister of Kappa Phi Lambda (KPL) is one of the best decisions I have ever made in my college life. KPL provides me with not only leadership experience but also lifelong sisterhood and sincere friendships. Founded on March 9, 1995 at Binghamton University by seven founding mothers, Kappa Phi Lambda made its way onto the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign campus in 2006. I strong believe in our philanthropy: CARE and our three pillars: Sisterhood, Service and Cultural Diversity. By serving as Academic Chair and Co-Cultural Chair, I lead my sorority and practice my leadership, communication, event-planning and teamwork skills.
Chair experience
Holding multiple positions as Academic Chair and Co-Cultural Chair, I highly appreciate the leadership opportunities that KPL provides to me.
Being a James Scholar, I am open to share my study methods to my sisters. By organizing study hours during the midterm weeks, I serve in the position to remind and support sisters the importance of academic excellence as Kappa sisters. By collecting each sister’s schedule and finding out the same classes they are taking, I help them to form study groups. In this case, sisters can easily know whom they can ask helps from and support each other. Moreover, being a part of the Illinois Leadership Center, I thought it would be great to connect my sorority to the Illinois leadership Center. By requesting an outreach and being a presenter myself, my coworkers and I did a fantastic outreach to KPL last month in Asian American Cultural Center by sharing the leadership programs and services that the Illinois Leadership Center offers. KPL sisters showed great interests after our presentation. Lots of them have signed up to attend different I-programs and applied for LeaderShape. I am glad that I can fully utilize my resources on campus and connect different RSOs I am involved in.
Being the Co-Cultural Chair, I strive to emphasize the importance of one of our three pillars: Cultural Diversity. I believe that by educating the UIUC community about the beauty as well as the complexity of Pan-Asian cultural heritage, I can help more people who are interested in Asian/Asian American cultures. I not only host different cultural events such as Mid Autumn Festival with my co-chair but also look for different Asian cultural events on campus for sisters to attend such as Asiantation and Filipino American Come Together (FACT). Last week, my co-chair Rachel Karn and I hosted our first cultural event: Mid Autumn Festival. During the experience of educating public the history, traditions and cuisines of this festival, I showed my strong ability of leadership by managing sisters to facilitate games and activities, supervising them to serve food to public and hosting cultural presentation and answering questions. The event turned out to be a great result with lots of positive feedbacks by attendants and sisters.
