There are lots of things that we want to change in our lives. However, in order to lead the change and persuade others to accept our ideas and put the changes into their own actions, we need some specific skills to be persuasive. For example, we need systems thinking skill, effective project skill and coalition building skills. Ignite gave me the chance to think deeply about what I want to change around me and provided me with strategies and tips that can be used to persuade and influence others in a more clear way.
I want to change the studying system in my residence halls, providing studying groups with the same majors students and creating residence hall study groups. There are no study groups in my residence halls, which contains more than 1000 students. If we initiate a study program, it will definitely benefit lots of students who need help of their study but didn’t realize they can solve the problems with their neighbor together. In this case, why not we create the “residence hall study group program” and help students achieve better academic scores while enabling them to form lifelong friends?
However, this vision will not come true without the help of other people. In order to bring the vision to life, I would need help from resident assistants. Being RAs, they have more organizing events experience, thus, increasing this vision’ effectiveness. Firstly, we would need to figure out everyone’s major based on the information RAs have. Secondly, we would need to invite all the RAs from different floors to gather and support the program. Last but not the least, the students be invited to join study groups based on their major. The cooperation with RA also shows my vision’s coalition building skills. Nothing will change if we do not work together. Therefore, changes need people’s cooperation and coalition skills.
During the program, I also learned the importance of presenting the vision completely and clearly to public. Through the sample pitch competition, there were some people who presented their vision clearly, enabling people to understand cooperate. However, there were also some people who had good ideas but lacked good presentation skills and clear presenting methods. They finished their pitch with a really low score. Therefore, both good presenting skills and interpersonal skills are very important to bring change to public.
