Imprint showed me how alumni apply the Situation Theory to reactions. Changes are important in our lives. It’s change that will make a difference for us. It’s also change that will bring us challenges that we need to overcome. Managing changes is necessary for success. Imprint provided me the opportunity to learn from others’ stories about transitions and how they handle them; how they adapt their leadership styles based on different situations. They also mentioned several skills that are important to manage transitions well.
Matt Helms, the current account Manager in Monsanto, graduated in 1996 from College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences major. Through the talk with him, I learned he had a difficult time transitioning from being a full time student to a full time employee. “I find it’s so hard to balance my career and social life. I barely had any social life after I started working. Career becomes my first priority. Unlike my college life, I have so many friends, so many organizations activities. The beginning of my first career was a nightmare and torture for me. I was so afraid that I couldn’t finish the project as my boss’ expectation.
Matt told me the importance of managing change. “Don’t become a working machine.” Matt gradually found the solution to this transition: He tried not to be too stressed. Instead of finished the whole week work, he decided to go to gym after work with friends and watched movies. He also went to city’s library a lot during the weekend instead of keep working. “Only learn try to relax yourself enable you to work more efficiently.” I understand that no matter school or work, we need to relax and not stress about upcoming challenges. With lighthearted and enthusiastic attitude towards our lives and work, we will definitely become the “best one”.
